Essence of Space: Award-Winning Flexible Residential Interior Design by Studio One in Taipei

Studio One's "Essence of Space" project, recently awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases a pioneering approach to urban residential interiors. Completed in 2024 in Taipei, the 58-square-meter apartment was conceived as a series of modular zones, each capable of transformation to suit the evolving needs and behaviors of its occupants. The design centers on maximizing flexibility and functionality in a limited footprint, using sliding and folding doors to allow seamless transitions between private and communal spaces.

Addressing the challenges of a bustling city environment and limited natural light, Studio One implemented an open floor plan to facilitate the flow of daylight from the apartment's sole window wall. Double-glazing was strategically used for both sound and heat insulation, ensuring a tranquil and comfortable living environment despite the urban setting. The design also features built-in wooden cabinets and metal racks anchored to the structural walls and ceiling, reinforcing safety and structural integrity-an essential consideration given the building's age and Taiwan's seismic activity.

"Essence of Space" stands out for its ability to blur and redefine boundaries within the home. Each area can function independently or merge into a unified open space, offering residents the freedom to adapt their environment as needed. The thoughtful selection of materials and spatial strategies not only address privacy and comfort but also reflect Studio One's philosophy of merging form and function. The result is a minimalist, rational interior that embodies versatility, order, and the potential for diverse living experiences within a compact urban dwelling.
