Nobuaki Miyashita's Urawa Garden Building, completed in February 2024 in Urawa, Saitama, Japan, has been honored with the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award 2025 for its pioneering approach to integrating office, public, and commercial spaces through dynamic architectural features inspired by historical urban layers.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Urawa Garden Building, designed by Nobuaki Miyashita, stands as a transformative new landmark in Urawa, Saitama, Japan. Drawing inspiration from the area's Edo-period street grids and the postwar vibrancy of local shopping streets, the building reimagines urban integration by embedding a public "through passage" and open plazas within its structure. This innovative design not only reconstructs historical pedestrian flows but also fosters community engagement, linking the city's past with its contemporary urban life.
A defining feature of the building is its striking facade, composed of floating glass cubes that symbolize the energy and lights of the former Nakaginza Seven shopping street. These cubes interact dynamically with the cityscape, shifting in appearance throughout the day and reinforcing the building's presence as a beacon of openness and transparency. Inside, the office environment is enlivened by natural materials, abundant greenery, and curated art installations, creating a stimulating workspace that encourages creativity and interaction among occupants.
The project's realization involved advanced architectural techniques, including the use of glass panels with varying transparency and innovative lightweight structures for the floating cubes. Sustainability is central to the design, with energy-efficient lighting and passive strategies ensuring comfort and environmental responsibility. The building's integration of public passageways and plazas not only enhances pedestrian networks but also establishes Urawa Garden Building as a new urban icon, successfully balancing commercial functionality with public accessibility.
