Nobuaki Miyashita's Urban Prism, a three-story house in Tachikawa, Tokyo, has been honored with the Bronze A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award 2025 for its inventive approach to urban living, seamlessly blending privacy, natural light, and spatial adaptability within strict zoning constraints.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Urban Prism, designed by Nobuaki Miyashita, stands as a testament to creative problem-solving in dense urban environments. Completed in 2019 in Tachikawa, Tokyo, the project transforms the limitations of local zoning laws into architectural opportunities. The residence features a multi-layered structure that fosters a dynamic interplay between openness and enclosure, integrating traditional Japanese elements with contemporary design to enhance the quality of urban life.
The home's sculptural form is shaped by Japan's stringent height and setback regulations, resulting in carefully arranged volumes and boundary walls that create a sequence of light-filled, adaptable spaces. A courtyard extends the living area outdoors, while adjustable screens and staggered walls allow residents to control privacy and daylight. The entrance is marked by black bamboo and upward lighting, evoking a tranquil Japanese aesthetic and establishing a serene threshold between city and sanctuary.
Durability and sustainability are central to Urban Prism's construction. The exterior features textured fiber cement siding, which accentuates the interplay of light and shadow and requires minimal maintenance. Inside, a harmonious blend of solid wood, steel, and glass creates a warm yet modern atmosphere, with oak flooring enhancing the tactile experience. High-performance insulated glass and movable screens optimize natural ventilation and privacy, while advanced daylight and airflow simulations informed every design decision. The result is a home that not only meets the demands of urban density but also offers a refined, adaptable, and peaceful living environment.
