Nobuaki Miyashita's "Embraced in Recycled Steel" office interior for Kyoei Steel in Yamaguchi, Japan, has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award 2025, recognizing its innovative use of recycled steel and integration of digital motifs to create a sustainable, visually striking workspace completed in early 2024.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Embraced in Recycled Steel," designed by Nobuaki Miyashita, redefines office interiors by transforming recycled steel into a central design element. Completed in early 2024 in Yamaguchi, Japan, for Kyoei Steel, the project utilizes angle steel, rebars, and flat bars-materials typically hidden within structures-as visible, aesthetic highlights. Barcode and QR code patterns, inspired by Kyoei Steel's digital branding, are seamlessly integrated throughout the space, symbolizing the journey from raw material to refined design and forging a strong connection between the company's industrial heritage and its contemporary digital presence.
The office's architectural language is further enhanced by innovative lighting solutions. Steel louvers in the ceiling incorporate billet-shaped seamless LED lighting, illuminating the barcode-inspired motifs and creating a dynamic interplay between recycled steel, technology, and light. These design choices not only reinforce the company's identity but also foster an interactive experience for employees and visitors, guiding movement and engagement within the workspace. The exposed structural elements and digital patterns work in harmony to produce a refined yet authentic environment that reflects both sustainability and modernity.
Spanning four floors and nearly 4,000 square meters, the office was realized through meticulous material experimentation, spatial simulations, and lighting analysis. The project overcame significant challenges, including the precise detailing of recycled steel and balancing raw textures with sleek digital motifs. The result is a sustainable, high-tech workspace that advances the aesthetic and functional integration of recycled materials in architecture. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award 2025, "Embraced in Recycled Steel" sets a new benchmark for sustainable design and corporate identity in office environments.
