Blarney, designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto, has been honored with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 for its inventive approach to flexible hospitality design, seamlessly blending an Irish pub and cafe within Osaka's Japan Post Tower Building. The project, completed in July 2024, reimagines traditional pub aesthetics to accommodate both early morning and late-night service, meeting unique operational demands.

Blarney, the third location of the popular Irish pub concept in Osaka, has been recognized for its creative response to the challenge of serving customers from morning to night. Designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto, the space is located in the bustling underground floor of the Japan Post Tower Building at Osaka Station. The project required a complete rethinking of the traditional Irish pub model to comply with strict facility rules mandating extended operating hours, leading to a unique dual-purpose environment that functions as both a cafe and a pub.
The centerpiece of Blarney's design is a custom counter back cabinet featuring pivoting doors. This innovative system allows staff to alternate between displaying alcoholic beverages for the pub atmosphere and cafe utensils for morning service, ensuring a seamless transition between the two modes. Instead of the heavy, ornate decorations typical of Irish pubs, the interior features monochrome wall art directly painted onto rusted metal motif panels. These artworks reference Irish cultural icons such as Blarney Castle, the four-leaf clover, the harp, and reinterpret classic Irish whiskey and Guinness posters, creating a warm yet understated ambiance that appeals to a diverse clientele.
The 70.78-square-meter space is carefully organized to maximize flow and comfort within its trapezoidal footprint. Tables are set at the same height as the bar counter to optimize seating in the narrow hall, while the coffee machine is strategically placed to serve morning commuters efficiently. The walls are finished in three distinct sections-cement-based material at the base, rusted metal motif in the middle, and grey wall cloth above-separated by an indirect light line that adds depth and sophistication. This thoughtful integration of form and function, coupled with a deep respect for both Irish tradition and Japanese hospitality standards, has earned Blarney the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award for 2025.
