Pure Semicircles, a new cram school in Ibaraki, Osaka, designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto, has been awarded Bronze in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award for its innovative use of minimalist forms, reflective materials, and cozy, student-focused spaces that foster both concentration and relaxation.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pure Semicircles, conceived by acclaimed architect Tetsuya Matsumoto, is a preparatory school in Ibaraki, Osaka, that reimagines the educational environment for teenagers. Completed in January 2025, the project addresses the dual need for focused study and relaxed, inviting spaces. The design centers on a striking semicircular entrance, featuring a rippled stainless steel ceiling and a mirrored wall that visually completes the circle, setting the tone for the school's unique blend of minimalism and warmth.
The 149.69-square-meter interior employs drywall construction and wall cloth finishes, with greenery and wood blinds introducing natural elements to soften the predominantly white palette. Linear lighting embedded in the stainless steel ceiling and downlights in the study areas ensure a bright, welcoming atmosphere. The spatial layout guides visitors from the semicircular reception to consultation booths, offices, and two distinct study rooms, each designed to maximize comfort and concentration within the school's narrow footprint.
Matsumoto's design was driven by research into creating spaces that balance academic rigor with aesthetic appeal, particularly for teenage students. The use of reflective and curved surfaces not only expands the perception of space but also makes the interior visually engaging. Overcoming challenges of limited space and budget, Pure Semicircles stands out for its innovative material choices and thoughtful integration of function and form. The project's recognition at the A' Design Awards highlights its contribution to the evolution of educational architecture in Japan.
