Huai'an Zhongshuge, designed by Li Xiang and located in Jiangsu, China, has been honored with the Platinum A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative interior that transforms the bookstore into a surreal, cosmic journey, blending local culture with celestial inspiration to create a new cultural landmark.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Li Xiang's latest project, Huai'an Zhongshuge, has been awarded the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award 2025 in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its exceptional innovation and contribution to contemporary design. Situated in Jiangsu, China, this bookstore redefines the traditional retail space by drawing inspiration from the vastness of the universe and the limitless potential of human knowledge. The design integrates local urban culture and the symbolic significance of books, establishing Huai'an Zhongshuge as a new cultural landmark for the city.
The interior of Huai'an Zhongshuge is a striking blend of surrealism and structural precision, dominated by exaggerated three-dimensional forms that evoke celestial mechanics. Concentric rings, irregular geometric structures, and spiral bookshelves mimic astronomical instruments and planetary orbits, inviting visitors to embark on a cosmic journey through literature. The use of traditional wood in a large-scale, two-floor planetary installation demonstrates a seamless fusion of functionality and aesthetics, achieved through advanced 3D modeling and computational simulation. This approach allowed the design team to overcome significant technical challenges, ensuring both structural stability and visual impact within a limited space.
Beyond its visual spectacle, Huai'an Zhongshuge offers a multi-functional environment where display, reading, and leisure are seamlessly embedded into its astronomical forms. Scattered books, reminiscent of fragments from infinite worlds, nestle within sculptural shelves, enhancing the immersive experience for visitors. The project stands as a testament to Li Xiang's vision of transforming commercial spaces into sensory escape points, where art, culture, and innovation converge to inspire and engage the community.
